Hi Everyone,
Wanna get away? Even if you could, you can't. The EU and other countries--even Mexico--have said to us, "You suck dealing with Covid. Stay out." We're grounded! Solution? Take an exotic sonic trip around the word with these 20 songs. Listen up! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/77ffgQt4NvEbbXx6Sp6YQX?si=l3unyorwRk-Xq7xb2WdVyA 1. "Wonderful World, Beautiful People" Jimmy Cliff. Jamaican reggae royalty born James Chambers sings this hopeful song, "We could all make it a better way with some love..." |
2. "Travelin Man" Ricky Nelson. Hollywood heart-throb, teenage idol and the world's most boring actor sings this B-side to "Hello, Mary Lou." Huge hit, originally written for Sam Cooke. Really.
3. "Back In the U.S.S.R" The Beatles."Been away so long I hardly knew the place. Gee, it's good to be back home." Donnie to Vladie, his first night back (January 2021).
4. "Free Man In Paris" Joni Mitchell. Great Canadian singer/songwriter's song about David Geffen chilling in his favorite city.
5. "The Israelites" Desmond Decker. Or Dekker. Your call. Jamaican "rude boy." Catchy song. That's all I got.
6. "Four Strong Winds" Neil Young. Written by Ian Tyson, covered a million times, one of Canada's most popular songs. Love Neil's version, harmony by Nicolette Larson.
7. "Mexico" James Taylor. Maybe my favorite JT song. JT waxes all about Mexico, then admits he's never been. By the way, I'm moving to Denmark. I've never been, but...
8. "Werewolves Of London" Warren Zevon.Giant hit after Tom Cruise danced and played pool to it in "Color of Money." Emotional lyrics such as "Little old lady got mutilated late last night." Mick Fleetwood and John McVie play behind Warren.
9. "Never Been To Spain" Three Dog Night. Written by Hoyt Axton, another song about dreaming about a place you've never been. Denmark looks good, I'm telling you.
10. "China" Tori Amos. Classically trained mezzo-soprano. Last minute addition to her "Little Earthquakes" album. Love this song.
11. "Rivers Of Babylon" Steve Earle. Written by members of the reggae group, The Melodians for the movie "They Harder They Come," lyrics taken from Psalms. Babylon is probably not on your travel wishlist.
12. "Norwegian Wood" The Beatles Lads again, this time from "Rubber Soul."
13. "Marrakesh Express" Crosby, Stills, Nash. Graham Nash song, first performed at Woodstock at like 3 a.m. Their hit at the time. Not the best advertisement for Morocco.
14. "The Girl From Ipanema" Stan Getz, Joao & Astrud Gilberto. Brazilian samba singer Astrud's first international recording, monster hit from 1965, the second most recorded song in history. #1? "Yesterday" by the Lads.
15. "Stockholm" Jason Isbell. Alabamian, former mainstay of the Drive-By Truckers. More about the syndrome than the country, but I love this song & HUGE fan of Izzy. I call him Izzy.
16. "Vienna" Billy Joel. Billy called this one of his favorite songs. "You got your passion, you got your pride, but only fools are satisfied..."
17. "Impossible Germany" Wilco. Tweedy & co finally hit the list. Nels Cline's stinging guitar solo alone is worth the trip. I'm playing air guitar right now. GREAT song.
18. "Under African Skies" Paul Simon. From 1986, features several South African musicians and harmony by Linda Ronstadt.
19. "Leaving On A Jet Plane" Peter, Paul & Mary. Written by John Denver. I much prefer this version. Redundant title. Jet plane? What other kind of plane are you leaving on? "Babe, I hate to go, I'm leaving on a prop job?"
20. "Love Train" The O'Jays. From Canton, Ohio, some call this the first disco hit. I say it's the perfect finale for our travel ban playlist. "People all aboard, all over the world!"
And there it is, our audio trip around the world in 20 songs.
Don't forget to disinfect and... PLAY IT LOUD.
