Hi All,
Can't sleep? Join the Covid insomniacs' club. Actually, I haven't slept since 1985 and I've been silently screaming through the night since 2016. So, grab your blankie, close your eyes, and curl up to these 23 "sleep" songs. Listen up! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0B8j96IKNaullrDMaUBOc5?si=dEmuLifCTlmDT9zdMUDIww 1. "Tossin' And Turnin'" Bobby Lewis. Indianapolis born, nearly blind, passed away in April at 95. This was a giant hit in 1960, describing my typical sleep pattern. 2. "I'm So Tired" The Beatles. John wrote this during his bout with insomnia when he was in India, missing Yoko. Touching. |
3. "Dream Lover" Bobby Darin. Big hit after which Bobby became more of a jazz singer. Love this song.
4. "You Can Close Your Eyes" James Taylor. From "Mud Slide Slim..." One of JT's most beautiful songs, some call it a lullaby. I tried that. Didn't work.
5. "Dreams" Fleetwood Mac. Stevie NIcks wrote this while everyone in the group was breaking up with their significant others, including her.
6. "All I Have To Do Is Dream" The Everly Brothers. Don and Phil sing this 1958 hit, Chet Atkins on guitar.
7. "Sleep Walk" Santo and Johnny. The Farina brothers, from Brooklyn, recorded this monster hit in 1959. That's it. That's their entire story.
8. "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" Eurythmics. Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox wrote and performed this huge hit in 1983. Their previous band, the Tourists broke up and they did too, as a couple, probably because they couldn't sleep.
9. "Tears On My Pillow" Little Anthony & The Imperials. The major hit of this Brooklyn doo-wop group. I do an uncanny Little Anthony impression. Few can tell us apart.
10. "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" Warren Zevon. Also a Bon Jovi song, a British crime drama. and five words that describe my work day.
11. "Last Night (I Didn't Get To Sleep At All)" The 5th Dimension. Marilyn McCoo sings lead on this pop hit, the title describing last night and every night for me: "The sleeping pill was just a waste of time."
12. "Twilight Time" The Platters. Formed in L.A. in 1952. Became huge stars after they changed their name from The Serving Trays.
13. "Dreams" The Cranberries. Early 90s new wave band formed in Limerick, Ireland, Niall Quinn, the lead singer. Not really about sleep or dreams, but you gotta hear this song.
14. "In Dreams" Roy Orbison. Passionate singer, called the "Caruso of Rock or "The Big O." Confusing. I thought Oscar Robertson was the Big O.
15. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" The Tokens. Group formed in high school, in Brooklyn. At least someone's sleeping, in this case, a lion. "A whim away...."
16. "Don't Dream It's Over" Crowded House. From Melbourne, Australia, written by Neil Finn. LOVE this song and the sentiment. "Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup..."
17. "In The Still Of The Night" The Five Satins. Doo wop group from New Haven. This song sold about a billion copies.
18. "Sleep On The Floor" The Lumineers. I just want to introduce this band to those who don't know them. One of my favorites. I listen to their three albums constantly.
19. "Just A Dream" Jimmy Clanton. Out of Baton Rouge, known as the "swamp pop R&B teenage idol." The nickname didn't stick (what a shock) but this song sold a million copies.
20. "When You Awake" The Band. Any time I can fit in a song by the Band, I will.
21. "Dreamin" Johnny Burnette. Rockabilly singer out of Memphis. Big hit in 1960.
22. "Oh What A Nite" The Dells. R&B group, this song is apparently about an unforgettable party thrown in their honor by a female friend.
23. "Wake Up" Arcade Fire. Indie rock collective from Montreal, led by husband and wife, Win Butler and Regine Chassaque. One of the best live shows I've ever seen.
Still awake? Oh, well. Until next week...
P.S. The Platters were never called The Serving Trays. They were originally Little Anthony and The Chafing Dishes.
