3. "Growing Up" Bruce Springsteen. The Boss sings about being a rebellious teen at Freehold (New Jersey) High School. "When they said sit down, I stood up."
4. "I Wish" Stevie Wonder. The pride of Saginaw, Michigan sings about his childhood, wishes he could do it over. I wish we could do a lot of things over.
5. "Teach Your Children" Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young. Graham Nash wrote this for his previous group, the Hollies, didn't record it until 1970 for the CSNY "Deja Vu" album.
6. "Charlie Brown" The Coasters. Doo-wop group, song written by Leiber & Stoller, King Curtis plays sax solo. I lip-synched this in an elementary school "talent" show. Placed 3rd.
7. "Teacher Teacher" Rockpile. Dave Edmunds and NIck Lowe led this great but short-lived British new wave band. This song is INFECTIOUS.
8. "(What A) Wonderful World" Sam Cooke. Oft covered song written by Sam, Lou Adler and Herb Alpert, describes my public school education.
9. "My Old School" Steely Dan. Jazz, blues, rock, Latin all in one band led by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker.This song about a bad day at Bard College where they both went.
10. "Be True To Your School" The Beach Boys. Brian Wilson/Mike Love write a high school fight song complete with cheerleader chants and rah-rahs. Pretty weird song when you think about it.
11. "Teach Me Tonight" Phoebe Snow. Born Phoebe Ann Laub. Great jazz/blues singer sings what has become a jazz standard, lyrics by Sammy Cahn, covered by everybody.
12. "Kodachrome" Paul Simon. "When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school..."
13. "School Day (Ring Ring Goes The Bell)" Chuck Berry. From 1957. School song has become a rock anthem. "Hail, hail rock 'n' roll."
14. "Smokin' In The Boys Room" Brownsville Station. One hit wonders from Ann Arbor!
15. "Another Brick In The Wall, Pt. 2" Pink Floyd. From the rock opera, "The Wall," became a hit single, features a children's choir, the song an argument for progressive education.
16. "Good Morning Little School Girl" Muddy Waters. Blues standard written by Sonny Boy Williamson in 1937. Love this version by McKinley Morganfield, Muddy's real name.
17. "Me and Julio Down By The Schoolyard" Paul Simon, again. Not about school at all but "school" is in the title and I love the song.
18. "Teacher I Need You" Elton John. Reginald Dwight, aka Sir Elton Hercules John, does a song about a schoolboy crush. Catchy, catchy song.
19. "Swingin School" Bobby Rydell. Co-star of "Bye, Bye Birdie" and owner of rock's biggest hair. Bobby recorded this in 1960, from the movie "Because They're Young."
20. "School's Out" Alice Cooper. "The Godfather of Shock Rock." Born Vincent Furnier, from Detroit, 50 years of performing shows filled with pyrotechnics. "School's out forever." We hope not.
