Hi Everyone,
Feeling Covid crazy? Pandemic panic? Coronavirus verklempt? I felt hopeful this week, but since staying home in March, I've gone through a range of emotions, sometimes hourly. What to do? Idea! Here are 19 songs filled with "emotion". Listen up! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5bT0gMNaTtes3o2SyArQh5?si=8VUAyR7mTfaJsI2n4DHvig 1. "19th Nervous Breakdown" The Rolling Stones. Mick & Keith wrote it, put it on "Aftermath," released it as a single. B-side: "As Tears Go By," which I could've chosen as well. 2. "Help!" The Beatles. "Help me if you can, I'm feeling down." I chose this instead of "I'm Down." Seemed too on the nose. |
3. "Helpless" Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young. Neil Young wrote this about his hometown in Canada: Helpless, Ontario. Great song.
4. "Crazy" Gnarls Barkley. Soul duo CeeLo Green and Danger Mouse recorded this huge hit in 2006.
5. "Crazy" Patsy Cline, The Jordanaires. Influential country singer Cline joins with Elvis Presley's backup group (formerly the Aire Jordans) to sing a Willie Nelson composition.
6. "Blue Moon" The Marcels. Group formed in Pittsburgh. Song written in 1934 by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, covered by many great jazz singers. Also, Marcel was the name of my first barber.
7. "Only The Lonely" Roy Orbison. Subtitled: "Know How I Feel." Urgent song, Roy's first big hit, from 1960.
8. "Nowhere To Run" Martha Reeves & the Vandellas. Great Motown girl group. For the last time, what is a Vandella?
9. "Anxiety" Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit. One of my favorite bands. Jason and his wife Amanda Shires co-wrote this, dealing with mental illness. Tremendous song.
10. "In My Room" The Beach Boys. Gorgeous song. "Now it's dark and I'm alone but I won't be afraid... in my room."
11. "Lonely Boy" Paul Anka. All-time great singer/songwriter from Canada, this song from 1959. Paul wrote "The Tonight Show" theme, among a million other hits.
12. "The Waiting" Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. "The waiting is the hardest part." Love Tom. He performed this on "It's Garry Shandling's Show."
13. "So Lonely" The Police. Sting, of course, on lead, heavy reggae-tinged. "You look like you're going somewhere." Not me. I haven't been out of my sweats in 7 months.
14. "Hello Walls" Faron Young. Smash hit in 1961, written by Willie Nelson. Faron was known as the "Hillbilly Heartthrob," which, strangely, is what my friends call me. P.S. Anybody else talking to the walls?
15. "Mad World" Gary Jules. Tears for Fears recorded this for the movie, "Donnie Darko." Another song that makes me verklempt.
16. "Rescue Me" Fontella Bass. From St. Louis. Her biggest hit. Well, okay, her hit.
17. "I Wanna Be Sedated" Ramones. First punk rock group, from Queens. They were going to call themselves Queen but the name was taken. Fine. That's a lie.
18. "Everybody Hurts" R.E.M. One of the great American rock bands, from Athens, Georgia. I saw their final live show. Song is self-explanatory.
19. "Don't Worry Be Happy" Bobby McFerrin. Jazz singer and improvisor, this was the #1 song of 1988, or as I like to call it, 32 million years ago.
Such feelings, huh? Now what do we do? How about this?
Don't Forget to Disinfect and...PLAY IT LOUD!
P.S. The Jordanaires were never known as the Aire Jordans.
P.P.S. Neil Young was not born in Helpless, Ontario. He was born in The Needle and the Damage Done, British Columbia.
