Hi Everyone,
This week, no surprise, I've put together 17 "crime" songs. I am feeling on edge. Trying for a cathartic playlist. Here we go: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/31U99jc6K6UpULQgeEYFjp?si=EDrL5MTaTJ6SUQVUIShPzg 1. "Murder Incorporated" Bruce Springsteen. "Out on the street your chances are zero." That's what we see time after time. When will it stop? 2. "Raised On Robbery" Joni Mitchell. From her album "Court and Spark" named Village Voice's Best Album of 1974. 3. Murder In The City" The Avett Brothers. I love the Avetts. A gorgeous song. "A tear fell from my father's eyes." So many tears. |
4. "I Shot The Sheriff" Bob Marley & the Wailers. The original and best version. Jamaican royalty. I listen to at least one Bob Marley song a day, especially these days.
5. "Take The Money And Run" Steve Miller Band. Blues band from San Fran, early members included Boz Scaggs, Norton Buffalo, Nicky Hopkins.
6. "Psycho Killer" Talking Heads. David Bryne et al, the all-time art rock band. I was OBSESSED with this song.Still am.
7. "I Fought The Law" The Clash. Written by Sonny Curtis of Buddy Holly's backup band, I love The Clash's cover. I love The Clash.
8. "Chain Gang" Sam Cooke. Sam wrote this song after seeing a chain gang of prisoners on the road while he was on tour. One of his biggest hits.
9. "Watching The Detectives" Elvis Costello. His first big hit, says he was inspired by The Clash. See? Great minds. PS These lyrics are eerily apt.
10. "Stolen Car" Bruce Springsteen. Two by Bruce? Yep. This from his album, "The River," about a failed marriage and a stolen car. Duh. Great song.
11. "Shoplifter" Green Day. Punk trio with headliner Billie Joe Armstrong, this from "American Idiot," punk rock opera, then Broadway musical, written in 2004 about Bush.
12. "Hey Joe" Jimi Hendrix. Greatest rock guitarist ever? He stole a few cars in his time. This is about a guy who shoots his wife.
13. "Lawyers, Guns And Money" Warren Zevon. I love Warren. This is about crime, Russian spys, guns, and bailing out your kid. Perfect Father's Day song.
14. "Suspicious Minds" Elvis Presley. Best Elvis song? Haunting lyrics: "We're caught in a trap, I can't walk out."
15. "Thieves" She & Him. Zooey Deschanel and M.Ward. She acts, she sings, she plays, he plays. Excellent song.
16. "Steal My Kisses" Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals. Not a crime song, but "steal" is in the title so that qualifies. Love this. Plus, Ben was married to Laura Dern, so...
17. "Back On The Chain Gang" Pretenders. Chrissie Hynde and company, this was maybe their biggest hit. Ending this crime wave playlist in chains.
That's it for yet another challenging week. Hope these songs resonate at least a little. Happy Father's Day. And don't forget... PLAY IT LOUD.
