"I've Been Lonely Too Long" The Young Rascals. Written by band members Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati. One of the best live bands ever. 2. "I Think We're Alone Now" Tommy James & the Shondells. 3. "Tired Of Being Alone" Al Green. Super soul singer known as the Reverend Al Green. This song is beyond brilliant in every way.
4. "Lonesome Day" Bruce Springsteen. The Boss and the E Street Band from the album "The Rising," written after 9/11.
5. "Lonely Teardrops" Jackie Wilson. Great singer who wanted to be a boxer. He sucked, his mother forced him to quit, and he turned to singing, thankfully. Big hit from 1959.
6. "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" Elvis Presley. Song written in 1926, Elvis recorded it in 1960 after his two-year stint in the army.
7. "Lonely Avenue" Ray Charles. Brother Ray aka The Genius sings this 1956 hit written by Doc Pomus.
8. "Lonely Days" Bee Gees. The Brothers Gibbs sing their first big U.S. hit, recorded in 1970.
9. "Solitude" Billie Holiday. Born Eleanora Fagan. Many call this her signature song. Written in 1934, music by Duke Ellington, lyrics by Eddie DeLange and Irving Mills.
10. "Flowers On The Wall" The Statler Brothers. Country group from Virginia began as backup singers to Johnny Cash. I love the guy with the bass voice who goes, "Kangggg."
11. "One" Three Dog Night. L.A. collective sang this Harry Nilsson song in 1969, the year I climbed Mount Everest.
12. "Hey There Lonely Girl" Eddie Holman. Another R&B falsetto. His hit, recorded in 1970. Likes gospel. Became a pastor. I'm vamping.
13. "Solitary Man" Johnny Cash. Neil Diamond song, his first hit in 1966 covered many times since. The Man in Black won a Grammy for his 2000 version.
14. "Mr. Lonely" Bobby Vinton. 1962 hit about a lonely soldier shipped overseas. A teen idol, Bobby was known as the "Polish Prince." Really.
15. "How To Fight Loneliness" Wilco. Tweedy and Company from the "Summerteeth" album. Great song, great band.
16. "Lonely People" America. Folk rock band America was formed in London. Three military brats got together in the seventies. Not to confuse you, but there is a band called London that was formed in America.
17. "Oh, Lonesome Me" Don Gibson. Major country singer/songwriter, this was a big hit in 1958.
18. "Lonesome Town" Ricky Nelson. Another hit from the late 1950's. Have you ever seen Ricky's performance in the classic western "Rio Bravo?" Don't.
19. "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" Bob Dylan. From "Blood on the Tracks" album, possibly a masterpiece. Well, he won the Nobel. I was only nominated.
20. "Blue Bayou" Linda Ronstadt. Written by Roy Orbison, became Linda's signature song. I always prefer her version to anyone else's.
21. "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" James Taylor. Great song. Great voice. Great tenor sax playing by Michael Brecker.
22. "Lonelier Than This" Steve Earle. "It doesn't get any lonelier than this..." Tremendous song from one of my favorites. His son, Justin Townes Earle, just passed away at age 38.
23. "Reach Out I'll Be There" Four Tops. The most famous Tops' song, one of the most famous Motown songs ever, written by Holland-Dozier-Holland.
